Australian Postcode and Suburb Next-Door Table

New release August 2003 now available!

With this product you can use any given postcode to find all neighbouring and adjacent postcodes and suburbs.

Perfect for creating a directory system to handle the case where no matches are found for a particular postcode or suburb then just continue the search using the information in this table so you can always deliver a search result..

The table containing all the next-door records is created by taking every every postcode and comparing to every other postcode to create a list of which postcodes are immediately adjacent, hence "Next Door".

In the example below the Postcode 2000 is surrounded by 5 postcodes: 2007,2008,2009,2010,2011.

One of those postcodes, in this example Postcode 2010, is in turn itself surrounded by 6 postcodes 2000, 2008, 2011, 2016, 2021, 2027.

The production process creates a set of records ideal for direct use in a database system - no complicated 3rd party software licences or costs - you use your own familiar and compatible tools.

A sample of the table record contents are as below.

2000,5,2007,2008,2009,2010,2011
2006,4,2008,2037,2042,2050
2007,4,2000,2008,2009,2037
2008,8,2000,2006,2007,2010,2016,2037,2042,2043
2009,3,2000,2007,2037
2010,6,2000,2008,2011,2016,2021,2027
2011,3,2000,2010,2027

Some interesting statistics for Australia are:

  • National Average for "number of neighbours" for all postcodes is 5.

  • 75% of all postcodes have between 3 and 7 neighbours.

  • Only 4% of postcodes have more than 10 neighbours.

A sample of 100 records from the product, is available in .CSV format in PCNSAMPLE.TXT for free download and testing.

The full product comprises approx 2,300 unique primary postcodes file with options for:

  • Include secondary postcodes, such as GPO Boxes. Eg 2001, 2004, 2005.. as equivalent to 2000.

  • Include Suburb Names and Postcodes to allow lookup of areas by suburb name to get surrounding Suburbs in same way as postcode.

  • Include areas joined by road or bridge across water that would not normally by considered adjacent in the strict geographic sense but are practically so by virtue of transport link. (An example is Sydney CBD and North Sydney).
